The transport of animals by Carga Viva Nacional is the service where the PET travels alone, that is, it is not linked to the owner’s air ticket, throughout Brazilian territory.
First, the animal travels in a transport box which must comply with the rules of the IATA – air transport regulatory body and must be rigid, have ventilation openings, suitable size for the pet, etc.
Different from the International Live Cargo service, on domestic flights the tutor can hire the service and carry out the boarding and disembarkation of the pet.
On international flights, this service requires the hiring of a customs broker to carry out export and import clearance.
If the animal is in another State/Municipality, PETFriendly Turismo carries out all the necessary procedures for boarding. We are located in SP – CAPITAL.

How does the transport of animals by Carga Viva Nacional work?
The animal is transported in the hold of the plane, with several established rules and regulations.
So, in the hold the temperature is controlled by the pilot of the aircraft and varies from 10°C to 23°C.
This compartment is pressurized and has lighting, but during the trip the light is turned off so that the PET can travel with greater comfort and tranquility.
Still, not all airlines provide this service, so you should pay close attention to your pet’s entire process.
For flights within Brazilian territory, the requirements are as follows:
- Annual rabies vaccine up to date* (Mandatory)
- Veterinary certificate issued 10 days before travel by the animal’s veterinarian, certifying the health of the animal and releasing it for the trip* (Mandatory)
- Up to date Vaccination Card* (Recommended: V10, Influenza, Giardia and in some regions of Brazil it is highly recommended for Leishmaniasis and ProHeart® SR-12.)
From the moment the airline receives the animal, neither we at PETFriendly nor the tutors have access to the animal anymore, as they are in an exclusive area of the company itself.
We all have to be aware that the success of a trip with pets in an airplane depends on the cooperation between all the parties involved: tutor, trainer, veterinarian, service provider (PETFriendly) and the airlines.
Difference between Excess Baggage and National Live Cargo
This is a big question for tutors, and to be clear, the hold of the plane is the same, but it changes the way the service is provided.
Excess Baggage:
Excess Baggage is when your PET travels linked to the owner’s airline ticket, on the same flight, in the hold of the plane.
In other words, the animal will be boarded as an “extra baggage” and will go to the tarmac along with all other baggage on the flight.
So, in this type of transport, the PET will have to wait for the entire baggage boarding process there on the tarmac and then be properly snuggled.
Like excess baggage, the service is usually carried out by outsourced companies, where people do not have adequate training to handle “live loads”.
Of course it depends much of the common sense and character of the service provider who is handling the baggage boarding operation.
Live Load:
Live Cargo is when the PET travels alone, unaccompanied, in the hold of the plane, not linked to any airline ticket of the tutor.
This varies depending on the airlines chosen and stopovers along the way.
The transport of animals by Carga Viva Nacional is carried out by a specialized team trained by the airlines to deal with this type of procedure and cargo.
In other words, the professionals who work in this area, in the vast majority of cases, have had enough training to perform their duties with the due care that pets should have.
Which is better? Depends on the route and duration of the trip! When a trip is non-stop, the excess baggage service works well, as well as being much more affordable ($).
On the other hand, when a trip is very long and with stopovers, the Carga Viva service is more interesting, because at stops the animal will receive special treatment, it will receive water and food and will be able to leave the transport box while it is will be clean.
Myths about the transport of animals by Carga Viva Nacional
In internet searches it is possible to find reports of animal deaths during flight in aircraft holds.
There are many possibilities that can cause a fatality, but it rarely happens due to the transport of live cargo, but due to other factors.
1. The animal dies in the plane’s hold
Some animals need more time to adapt to the transport box and if there is not a correct training, the pet can really get stressed and present problems.
Thus, some tutors believe that the solution for the smooth boarding of the animal is to administer medicines with “tranquilizing” effects, and instead of helping it becomes the main factor for a tragedy.
In this sense, at PETFriendly Turismo this practice is not recommended for any PET transport situation and the boarding of tranquilized animals is also not accepted on airlines.
2. Brachycephalic animals cannot travel in the aircraft hold
Brachycephalic animals are those that have the snout “flattened or short”.
Thus, due to the anatomy of their skull, in extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold, they may have some breathing difficulties.
However, with proper planning, it is possible that the short-snouted animal can board without major problems.
In addition, there are restrictions on flights, schedules and some companies do not provide this type of service. In Brazil, only Latam Cargo can ship these animals.
These animals are not accepted for boarding as Excess Baggage and their transport boxes must be larger than an animal of the same size and that has a “normal” muzzle.
3. Accidents in the transport of Live Cargo
The vast majority of accidents in the transport of animals happen in the Excess Baggage service and not as Live Cargo and almost always due to human error.
However, despite seeing horrible news on the internet, these accidents are not common, considering the number of animals that travel by plane per day/year.
When tr is not indicated Animal transport by Live Cargo
In some situations it is not recommended to transport animals in the hold of the plane, due to comorbidities that can cause problems for the health and well-being of the pet.
1. Elderly Animal
It is not recommended to transport animals of advanced age due to the stress arising from the trip, which could harm the welfare and safety of the animal.
2. Health problems
When the animal is already diagnosed with liver, kidney, heart, neurological problems or is on controlled medication.
That is, in such a situation, the responsible veterinarian must evaluate and consider the feasibility of the shipment.
3. Pregnant females / in heat
The boarding of pregnant animals is not allowed due to the high stress that the trip can cause, bringing risks to the mother and the babies.
The boarding of females in heat is also not allowed, as this can directly affect other pets that are on the same flight.
However, not all airlines work with the Carga Viva Nacional service and for that reason you should plan all parts of the trip so that nothing unforeseen happens.
4. Very young animals
Recently (SEP/2021) there was a case of a Golden who died on a Latam flight.
In this case, the PET had the age required by the airline, which is 8 weeks (56 days), but it is a very young animal.
That is, without any adaptation in the transport box, and that he had just been separated from his mother, a tragedy.
Here at PETFriendly Turismo, we only ship animals that are at least 4 months old, to ensure the pet’s well-being and health.
Airlines that provide the National Live Cargo service
Here in Brazil, the companies that provide this service are Latam Cargo and GOLLOG, each with its own particularities.
GOL: Gol performs the Live Cargo service, but it does not accept Brachycephalic or “Dangerous Breeds” animals.
However, in addition to having a limit of animals up to 45 kg (pet + transport box), exceeding this weight they also do not accept.
LATAM: Widely used here by the PETFriendly team. They have no weight limit and accept animals with short noses and dangerous breeds, however following all the different rules and requirements.
In addition, both companies require departures and arrivals to take place between 18:00h and 10:00h, where temperatures are lower.
The price of this service varies according to the section and the cubage, which is the relationship between the weight and volume of the cargo.
How is the Live Cargo service provided at PETFriendly Turismo?
On domestic flights, we basically use the Latam Cargo service, where we never had any problems, in addition to accepting almost all breeds of animals.
In this way, the tutor will be guided in every step to make the animal’s journey the best possible, arriving at the destination in perfect health.
Thus, we provide several tips that make the journey of the owner and pet as smooth as possible.
