How to take dogs and cats to Europe is still a subject that generates a lot of doubts, as some countries on the continent have specific requirements and still have different rules for the United Kingdom.
In addition to all mandatory documentation and Microchipping, they still require the Rabies and Quarantine Serology exam to be performed.
Therefore, in addition to organizing the documentation, tutors also need to pay attention to the required dates and follow the requirements of microchip brands, vaccines and the laboratories that can perform the serological test.
Now, if you want to know how to take dogs and cats to Europe, keep reading this article that PETFriendly Turismo has specially prepared for you.
How to take dogs and cats to Europe?
Europe has a number of requirements for receiving pets from other countries, including:
- Microchip
- Anti-rabies vaccine
- Serology
- Quarantine
- Veterinary Health Certificate
- Import Permit (not all countries)
- CVI
However, some countries have requirements and some restrictions on breeds considered “dangerous ” and are not allowed or have different standards.
So a targeted search for each European destination with the pet is very valid.
See below for all requirements to bring dogs and cats to Europe.
Microchip
The main requirement for any international travel is that your dog or cat has an identification microchip.
The animal must receive the chip implant before receiving the rabies vaccine.
Everything that was done before microchipping will not have legal validity, so if the animal already has the rabies vaccine before the microchip, it must be redone with an interval of at least 30 days from the previous dose.
This procedure must be performed by a veterinarian.
Anti-rabies vaccine
To travel with pets to Europe, the animal must be vaccinated against rabies.
Still, the pet must be at least 12 weeks old before vaccination.
Vaccines from City Hall campaigns or national vaccines are not accepted for entry into the European Continent, so the tutor needs to look for an imported vaccine that is recognized worldwide.
All this information must be on the animal’s passport or on the International Zoosanitary Certificate (CZI or CVI).
In addition, the vaccine must be within the expiration date informed by the manufacturer.
Serology of Rabies
Animals from the European Union or rabies-free countries can enter the UK 21 days after receiving the rabies vaccine.
However, in the case of pets from Brazil, they must first be tested for serology.
Thus, the examination must be performed 30 days after the application of the vaccine. In addition, a blood sample from the animal must be sent to an authorized laboratory.
Here in Brazil we have TECSA (Belo Horizonte) and USP (São Paulo).
People from other states should hire a veterinarian who knows the process, as he will need to send the animal sample and all the documentation correctly.
The result takes about a month to return to the recipient and after this process is complete, the veterinarian provides the test results.
