To travel with a dog to the USA, it’s not enough to put him next to you, buy a plane ticket and go to your destination.
On the contrary, there are requirements to be fulfilled by you, the mother or father of a pet, even more so now that the rules for dogs in Brazil and other 100 countries have become much more complex, due to the non-eradication of rabies.
According to US CDC website – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the new rules take effect from 07/14/2021.
As the Brazilian Government itself emphasizes, international travel with pets requires international passport or veterinary certificate.
And if some of these requirements are not met, your trip will not take place.
All documentation must be in English or a sworn translation to avoid any problems when boarding or disembarking the animal.
However, a few tips can ensure that your outing or moving to another country with your four-legged child is a success and happens in a way that there are no surprises.
For that reason, PETFriendly Turismo has prepared this article to show you how to travel with a dog to the USA starting from basic tips and separated which are the main rules and requirements that the your pet should follow.
Traveling with a dog to the US takes time
To travel with a dog to the USA, you need to have at least 150 days (5 months) advance planning, ensuring that you have all the time you need to take care of all the care.
p>Before the new requirements, the tutor needed much less time, about 30 to 60 days to complete all the procedures.
So, you need to define the days to make the trip and go after your pet’s requirements to have everything in hand until the day of the flight.
That said, PETFriendly Turismo will show you the new requirements for traveling with a dog to the USA chronologically.
In other words, we recommend that you follow these steps as structured here so you don’t run the risk of having your trip cancelled.
Microchipping: The first leg of the journey
This step is considered the “ZERO DAY” of the entire process, so this is the first step for anyone who wants to travel to the United States of America accompanied by their dog.
Not just any Microchip will be accepted on American soil. They must comply with ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 which are recognized worldwide.
This service is performed by a Veterinarian, where a small CHIP is inserted into the back of the animal that works as a “CPF” of the animal and there you will have all the information of the animal and the tutor.
Arabies vaccine for traveling with dog to the US?
The dog must be up to date with the rabies vaccination. Still, it is worth mentioning some important information that, if you disagree, can cause you and your pet to miss the flight.
Vaccination is the second step of the whole process and can be done on the same day as Microchipping, but never before.
Thus, if the animal is already vaccinated and does not have a microchip, it must undergo this microchipping process and be vaccinated again.
For this application, an interval of at least 30 days from the previous vaccination must be respected.
Apart from that, it is also worth mentioning that only imported vaccines are valid.
They must be administered in veterinary clinics and remember that national vaccines and vaccination campaign by the City Hall are not considered.
Finally, the boarding of the pet also depends on the state of the vaccination card. In the document, all the tutor’s data must be legible, informing name, address and telephone number.
Serology for Rabies for Traveling with a Dog to the US
Until 07/13/2021 this was not a mandatory step for dogs to travel to the United States of America, but with the new rules this is an essential step.
The rabies serology is a test that identifies whether the animal has antibodies against the rabies virus and is recommended to be carried out between 30 and 90 days after vaccination.
A term shorter or longer than this may generate a low amount of antibodies and thus the animal will not be able to board.
Only 5 laboratories in the world are accredited by the American CDC to perform this test:

Quarantine for dog traveling to the US
With the new measures adopted by the American Government, the dog will have to comply with a 45-day quarantine, only then to be able to enter the CVI (International Veterinary Certificate).
This quarantine is normal life for the animal, it will be able to walk, bathe, interact with other animals, but it will not be able to leave Brazil during this period.
The start of the quarantine is on the day of the collection of the rabies serology and from then onwards the 45-day count begins to obtain the rest of the documentation.
Import Permit for a dog to travel to the United States
Another new requirement for the entry of dogs from Brazil to the US is the Import Permit, and so far it cannot be requested for travelers with a tourist visa.
This must be done 6 weeks before the trip so that the Government authorizes the boarding of this animal and is aware of the day that the pet will arrive on American soil.
Apply dewormer and antiflea
A requirement for traveling with a dog to the USA is the application of deworming and flea treatment 15 days before the flight.
However, it is worth mentioning that not just any medicine works, so you and the veterinarian in charge should pay attention to the medicines you choose.
Thus, have the name, the laboratory and the active ingredient at hand for any problem or question from the Official Veterinarian of the American government.
Issue a clean bill of health for the pet
Issuing a health certificate for your pet is also required and can be done up to 5 days before the trip. Even so, many tutors make mistakes at this stage because of an important detail.
It is not enough for a veterinarian to issue a health certificate, he must follow the model standardized by the Agricultural Surveillance (Vigiagro), an agency linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply.
The document can also be found at this link. With this, it must be filled out, stamped by the responsible veterinarian and then delivered to the Ministry of Agriculture for the issuance of the International Veterinary Certificate – CVI.
Ask for the International Veterinary Certificate
Finally, the last document needed to travel with a dog to the USA is the International Veterinary Certificate (CVI).
The issuance can be carried out online by the pet’s tutor, at least 5 days in advance.
This advance notice is a requirement made by the United States. For cats, the certificate can be issued 10 days in advance.
To request the CVI, you must click on this link, go to the “start” button (middle left corner), log in with your Gov.br platform data and follow the steps.
